Refuse the Stew!

Divider
Thus Esau despised his birthright.

Genesis 25:34

Esau came from the field incredibly hungry and desperate for food. He may have smelled the fragrance of Jacob’s stew and his stomach grumbled horribly. When he asked Jacob for stew Esau probably didn’t expect the request of his birthright in return. Yet, because of his shallow thinking about Abraham’s promise from God, he carelessly flung it towards his brother. Only later in life did he realize its significant value, but it was too late to change it.

We look at Esau and wonder how could he do it? Even in our hungriest moments, most of us would never dream of giving up our trust fund. We would walk away to find food somewhere else because we’d recognize the fact that (1) we will find food eventually, (2) we could eat the stew, but get hungry again later, and (3) our heritage has a far most lasting value.

Yet, many times we are just like Esau! In our weakest moments, Satan will find something we really want and offer it to us on a silver platter. It could be sexual immorality to satisfy our urges, stealing in tithes/offerings or money from others to fulfill our own selfishness, or whatever gives us the immediate fulfillment of our desire. However, doing so—we fling our godly heritage away. We don’t value it more than our carnal or fleshly desires.

What could’ve happened if Esau refused the stew? God would’ve honored his faith and just like He provided for Abraham—He would’ve provided for Esau. If we refuse the stew of temptation that lurks all around us at our weakest moments, God will honor our faith and provide what we need when we need it most.

Refusing the stew begins even before we are tempted. It begins in our hearts when we truly believe God’s word and follow it with all of our hearts. The truth will set us free from falling into the traps of temptation.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I want to refuse the stew of temptation in my life. I need Your Spirit to enlighten my heart and mind to hear and obey Your words of truth. In Jesus’ name, amen.
