Rebuilding Broken Relationships

Divider

First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

Mathew 5:24

Have you ever tried to rebuild the walls of a broken relationship after a difficult disagreement with family members or friends? It can be a long difficult process, but attainable through the grace and mercy of God. Through the steps of R.E.B.U.I.L.D., relationships can be restored through the Holy Spirit’s leading.

R – Repent
Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out. (Acts 3:19) We must be reflective and honest if we’ve caused this break down in the relationship.

E – Exhort
But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. (Hebrews 3:13) Being genuine in our encouragement of another person can help them come around faster than an attitude of judgement.

B – Believe
The righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:22) If all parties involved are believers in Christ, there’s opportunity to find closure and peace.

U – Unify
With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. (Ephesians 4:3,4) Find the areas where there is unity in the Spirit to agree and acceptance.

I – Involve
For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them. (Matthew 18:20) Receiving help from church leaders or counselors can help bring reconciliation where there is brokenness.

L – Love
Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. (1 Peter 4:8) Our love for each other transcends our weaknesses and faults—if we are willing to forgive and trust God to change our hearts.

D – Do
So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. (Galatians 6:10) Our good works even in times of a broken relationship isn’t lost on God.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I pray for the strength and wisdom to rebuild this relationship as much as it is up to me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
