Racism is a Heart Issue

Do not be surprised, brothers, that the world hates you.

1 John 3:13

When I moved into my town over 25 years ago, there was “racism not in our town” no symbol signs set up all around. Yet, even though the signs were up with good intentions—racism is never changed by laws or rules. Racism is a heart issue.

Any person regardless of their race, culture, or religious beliefs can harbor racism in their hearts. When hatred spills out of a person’s heart, it damages everything in their lives. They can’t just hate the people who are different from them. Their hatred comes against everything that is good, pure, and righteous. Their hatred pours out towards themselves and the people who live and work with them.

A racist heart can only be thoroughly changed through a genuine, personal relationship with Jesus Christ. He died for the racists as much as He died for each one of us. What should our response be towards those who have racist hearts?

Our response to racist people should be one of wisdom, grace, and the love of God. When we participate in the wicked rhetoric exchanged with racist men and women, we step out of the will of God. Our role is to be ambassadors of the living God in our homes, jobs, neighborhoods, and communities. This doesn’t mean we leave common sense at home—as much as the law provides, we deal with prejudice and discrimination that are born out of racism. Yet, we recognize it for what it is, a heart issue that is only remedied with repentance in the Lord.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I recognize that racism is a heart issue. I pray for Your protection over my heart to not return evil for evil to those who are hateful. In Jesus name, amen.
