Not Stuck in the Generational Rut

Divider

Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.

Deuteronomy 7:9

As believers in Jesus Christ, we are not victims of our parents’ decisions or lifestyles. We may have suffered or are suffering from their choices; however, in Christ Jesus we are free from those generational bondages. Many of us have witnessed the multigenerational issues of alcoholism, drug use, sexual immorality, theft, lies, anger, and much more. Some of us thought this was normal until we matured to see life outside the walls of family perceptions.

Many people have escaped their parental examples. Yet without Christ, they find other ways to fill those spiritual, emotional, and physical gaps. They may not do exactly the same vices of their parents or grandparents, but they have the same end results of regret, shame, and guilt.

However, it’s not that way for those who give their lives to Christ. The same power that brought Jesus back from the dead is available to those who want to be free from bondage passed down through the generations. We must first recognize the damage and desire to be free from it. Afterwards, we seek God’s intervention, wisdom, and knowledge to be free. This happens when we pray, search through His word, and seek godly counsel.

So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36). You will know the freedom of Christ because He is more powerful than any generational defect of sin. Your freedom may or may not be immediate, but it’s coming as long as you stay connected to the Lord. This freedom in Christ isn’t just meant for you but also to other willing family members as well as those whom the Lord puts in your path. Freedom is just the beginning!

Prayer

Dear Lord, I want to be free of this generational mess, and I long for Your presence in my life. I pray that You will provide everything I need to walk in the freedom that is available in Christ Jesus. Amen.
