Not Ordinary but Extraordinary

And whatever he did, the LORD made it succeed.

Genesis 39:23

When Joseph’s brothers saw him, their jealous eyes could only see an ordinary boy who was the favorite son of their father—yet they eventually bowed down to him. When Potiphar first met Joseph, he saw a common slave—yet he eventually made him an overseer of everything in his house. When the jailer first knew Joseph, he saw an accused prisoner, whom he eventually put in charge of all the prisoners. When Pharaoh first saw Joseph, he hoped for a potential seer to help him with a dream, but he eventually made Joseph second in command.

Just like Joseph, we are initially only seen through people’s first perception of us. “She’s only a single mom.” “She’s only a wife of that man.” “She’s only a worker on the line.” “She’s only a kid.” “She’s only a single woman.” It doesn’t matter whatever ordinary titles are placed on us; we are seen by God as extraordinary women with a purpose.

Those same people who may put us down don’t know that we are interceding for their souls. They don’t know that we are praying for wisdom on our jobs. They don’t know that God has a greater purpose for us and that we aren’t defined by what we do, rather by Whom we serve.

In 2 Corinthians 4:7, we understand that “we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.” The power of God within us gives us the ability to accomplish our dreams and destiny beyond what we could do in our natural talent or strengths. He blesses us with everything we need to surpass the ordinary and fly to the extraordinary life that God calls us to achieve.

Prayer

Dear Lord, help me to resist the ordinary thoughts about myself, and give me the grace to rise to the extraordinary plans You have for me. Amen.
