No More Excuses for Sin

But now they have no excuse for their sin.

John 15:22

As believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, we have power from God to overcome sin. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice, sin has no power over us. Yet, many of us yield to sin consistently and make excuses for our choices. We overestimate our ability to control sinful habits and then we place ourselves in situations where we will be tempted to sin. There comes a time when we need to grow up in spiritual maturity and make no more excuses for our sins.

The problem with attempting to live a dual life is that sin will wear us down. When we seem to get away with our sin, we will find ourselves like Samson—who would shrug off his enemies until one day his strength (God’s glory) left him. Sin will rob us of our destiny and it will ruin our testimony in Christ.

We have a choice—to deal with it or to continue in the lifestyle we know is wrong. If we choose to be free from our sin, it will be intentional with our attitude and actions. Our attitude will reflect the reality of Jesus’ suffering on the cross because of our sin. Our actions will reflect a determination to turn away from living a sinful lifestyle. How can we break away from our sinful choices?

Step 1: Admit our sins to God and to mature believers in our lives.
“Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.” (James 5:16)

Step 2: Deny ourselves the same access or environment that cultivates the desire to sin.
“But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.” (Romans 13:14)

Step 3: Renew the right relationship with God in prayer, Bible study, and accountability in church fellowship.
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” (Psalms 51:10)

Prayer

Dear Lord, I need Your forgiveness for my sinful behavior. I want to be made right in You—lead me in the right paths of living in obedience. In Jesus’ name, amen.
