New Year’s Theme #1: Love More Deeply

With the New Year on the horizon, it’s a good time for us to reflect on how we can love others more deeply. Sometimes it can be difficult to show love to everyone, especially those who have caused pain in our lives. It’s in these times we can seek the power of God to love unconditionally, as we are loved by Christ.

Our love is expressed beyond mere words and is revealed by our actions. John wrote, “But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth” (1 John 3:17-18).

The love of God is actively engaged in the hearts of His children. We are the hands and feet of Jesus Christ to minister to one another and those in the world. When we love instead of returning hate, we are most like our Lord. How can we love more deeply in the New Year?

Love more deeply by asking the Lord to make our hearts more sensitive to the needs of others (1 John 3:17).

Love more deeply by seeking the power of God to love those who hate us (Luke 6:27).

Love more deeply by giving our best in gifts and offerings for the kingdom of Christ (2 Corinthians 9:7).

Love more deeply by showing mercy to those who don’t deserve it (Luke 10:37).

Love more deeply by humbly submitting to those who are our leaders (Hebrews 13:17).

Love more deeply by using our spiritual gifts and natural talents to edify the church (Ephesians 4:11-13).

Love more deeply by resisting gossip and instead speaking only words of encouragement (Ephesians 4:29).

Prayer

Dear Lord, I want to love more deeply in the New Year. I need Your Spirit to empower me beyond my natural abilities to show love. In Jesus’ name, amen.
