The disciples went back to their homes…but Mary stood weeping.
Jesus was mercilessly crucified in front of his followers, who knew Him to be innocent and righteous. He was buried and placed in the tomb. Three days later, the disciples found out through Mary Magdalene and other women that Jesus’ body was removed. Peter and John took off running to the tomb, looked around in bewilderment, and went home. But not Mary–she stayed there. As a result, our Lord appeared to Mary first and comforted her. She went back and boldly announced to the disciples that Jesus was alive.
What do you do in times of bewilderment? The world turns to many things such as alcohol, drugs, recreation, and the arms of another in order to find something to numb the pain. Yet as believers, we are to stay firm in the faith and wait on the Lord to show us the next steps. Just as Mary stayed and wept, we too may find ourselves weeping before the Lord in the early morning or late hours of the night.
Yet if we stay, He will meet us there. The Lord will give us comfort and hope through the Holy Spirit and His word. When we wait patiently on God, He will not disappoint or abandon those who serve Him out of a pure heart. We stay when everyone else runs back home. We stay on our knees and call out to our Father. We stay in the Word of God for our strength and peace in the midst of craziness. We stay active in our church fellowship and service to the body of Christ.
Our faithfulness–one moment at a time–isn’t lost on the Lord. He knows where we are and what we need from Him. Just stay and wait.
Dear Lord, I’ve been grieved in my spirit, and I make myself stay at Your feet. Show Yourself to me so that I may be comforted and strengthened to move forward. Amen.
