Knowing God

That I may know him …

Philippians 3:10

Knowing God is more than believing in His existence. Even Satan and his demons believe in God (James 2:19)! When we give our hearts to God, there is evidence of change. No one comes to know God and remains the same because of the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. To really know God means we make an effort to stop our busy lives and really know Him.

We stop to know the Bible. Familiarity with the living word can’t be accomplished on Sunday services alone. It is the discipline of reading, meditating, and applying God’s word every single day. Knowing the Scriptures gives us confidence when we are stuck in a rough place spiritually, emotionally, or physically.

We stop to sense the presence of His Spirit. He will lead us into all truth, and He will comfort us when we are hurting. As believers, we have the Spirit of God always guiding in the right direction, especially when we don’t always know where we are going.

We stop to hear His voice. Jesus said that His sheep will recognize His voice. As we commit ourselves to prayer and Bible study, His voice will become more familiar to us. The Lord would never tell us to do something that is contrary to the teachings of the Bible. Our confidence in hearing His voice will grow as we continue to mature in our faith.

Knowing God is no different than when we know our family or friends. The regular participation in each other’s lives gives us a greater awareness of each other’s needs and desires. So it is with knowing God—as we grow in our relationship with Him, we will develop a greater confidence and intimacy with Him.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I want to know You more. Help me to persevere in my Bible study and prayer so that I can become more acquainted with Your ways. Amen.
