It Happened

Divider

It happened, late one afternoon when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful.

2 Samuel 11:2

When kings were supposed to be engaged in battle, King David decided to stay in Jerusalem. He saw Bathsheba taking a bath, and he was enamored and intrigued. David invited her to his home where they committed adultery, and their sexual act resulted in her pregnancy. He attempted to cover it up by getting her husband, Uriah, drunk and sending him home to his wife. But it backfired because Uriah wouldn’t sleep with his wife because he was a committed soldier and leader. As a result, David arranged for Uriah to be killed and following Bathsheba’s days of mourning, David married her.

Why did all this happen? Because David was in the wrong place at the wrong time. It happened to David. It happens to us when we decide what is best for us instead of asking God what He thinks is best for us.

‘It happens’ to the strong and weak believers. ‘It happens’ could be a careless flirtation with a co-worker. ‘It happens’ could be a late night that turns into sensuality. ‘It happens’ could be an urge to take more money than what we are supposed to take. ‘It happens’ when we are negligent to think spiritually and instead are drawn towards the desires of our carnal nature.

Yet it doesn’t have to happen if we remain sober and alert to the deceitfulness of the world, our sinful nature, and the devil. All three are constantly pulling us towards pleasing ourselves rather than pleasing God. When we intentionally choose God over our desires, we position ourselves to live a life without great regrets. It doesn’t have to happen…

Prayer

Dear Lord, I have let ‘it happen’ in my life too many times. I want to live better and free from regrets. Give me the strength to resist the desires of my flesh. Amen.
