I grew up always saying to myself “I’ll be glad when…” I’ll be glad when this test is over. I’ll be glad when I get to leave the house. I’ll be glad when I graduate from school. I’ll be glad when this interview is over. I’ll be glad when I get a promotion.
We all have the moments of testing and trials when we are looking forward to the ending of one thing so we can move on to another. The problem is that we don’t get too much further in the new things before we are looking forward to its ending as well. Yet every moment in every season of our lives is used by God. He doesn’t waste our joys or sorrows and everything is leading to us towards putting our complete trust in Him.
God is calling us to find contentment in our lives rather than always desiring the next best thing. Many people on their deathbed regret all the times they rushed through life without really learning to enjoy what was right in front of them. We need to learn to stop and smell the roses in the present moment because we don’t always get another chance.
“I’ll be glad when” is loaded with conditions for our happiness and peace. Yet to be godly and content means that our lives are full even though we aren’t the wealthiest people on earth. We can find our joy in the midst of trials. We can find our purpose in the midst of a jumbled life of activity. We can find a way to enjoy the precious moments of life that are a gift from God to us.
“I’ll be glad when” reveals our lack of faith in God’s perfect timing for our lives. He is the master Orchestrator of every believer. The Lord directs our paths to Him so that we can learn contentment in every situation.
Dear Lord, teach me to be still and learn contentment in my life. I pray for your guidance to lead me in the right ways of truth. Amen.
