I’ll never forget the day when a close friend broke their promise to me. I trusted they would keep my secret because of our friendship; however, I was betrayed even before the end of the day!
I learned an important lesson: people don’t always keep their promises. It’s not that people always intend to be malicious or hateful—they are human and make mistakes. It could be something minor such as showing up 15 minutes late without calling first or huge like breaking a commitment. Yet, God is not like people. We find in Numbers 23:19 that “God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?”
He has a solid track record of keeping His promises. He kept His promise to Abraham and Sarah about having an heir. He kept His promise to the Israelites to reach the Promised Land. He kept His promise to David that the King of kings would be born in his family line.
God also keeps His promises to us—He will never leave nor forsake us. He promises the gift of the Holy Spirit to all those who seek after the Savior. He promises us eternal life after death. He will never lie to us not one time.
Our response to God’s promises is that we will trust in Him even when we don’t understand everything around us. As we continue to mature in our spiritual walk, we learn to embrace His promises and not doubt His goodness. A promise made is a promise kept from our God.
Dear Lord, help me to trust in Your promises even when my life feels out of control. I know that You will keep Your promises to me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
