Get your Feet Wet

Joshua 3:15

Joshua was a new leader following after the huge footsteps of Moses. He was leading the people from the wilderness into the Promised Land, but they had to cross the overflowing Jordan river first. Only Joshua and Caleb would have the memory of the parting of the Red Sea 40 years before this time. Yet the people would have to step out in faith and trust that God had a plan for them to move forward. And it began with the priests stepping up to the water and getting their feet wet.

As we move from faith to faith, we are going to have those times when we need to get our feet wet. It could be following the career that God has directed us to take even though our work experience and education say differently. It could be a move to a new location or surrendering to God’s calling to full time ministry. Whatever “it” is, it’s our responsibility to take the first steps of faith in getting our feet wet. How do we take those first steps?

Step #1) Start with prayer for greater clarity in the purpose and process.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” (James 1:5)

Step #2) Seek godly counsel and advice.
“Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future.” (Proverbs 19:20)

Step #3) Search the scriptures for those that speak to your heart most definitively.
“Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way.” (Psalm 119:104)

Step #4) Set aside time for fasting and meditation.
“Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.” (Acts 13:3)

Step #5) Step out in faith!
“You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works.” (James 2:22)

Prayer

Dear Lord, I know it’s time for me to step out in faith and get my feet wet. I pray that You lead me in the right paths, give me the strength to move forward, and increase my discernment for truth. In Jesus’ name, amen.
