For Your Good

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:28

When a major life crisis hit me a few years ago, I remember sitting before God and wondering how anything good could come out it. As I struggled day by day, I kept coming back to God with this question: “What happened to my life?”

As a mature believer, I’m well acquainted with Romans 8:28, as many people have reminded me that God is able to make my tough situation work for my good. However, in the moment, I didn’t take immediate comfort from it. I was in the trenches of my life, and it was difficult to see anything beyond that.

Yet I kept pressing in and down in my relationship with the Lord. At times it was rough. I would plead my case like Job did.  Haven’t I done the right things? I would express my disappointment with many tears and pleading before God at night. However, every morning I would wake up to the refreshing and encouraging presence of God, which gave me strength to press forward with the day.

Looking back, I know that I’m more tough and tender as a person. I’m tougher in my faith and strength in trusting God despite difficulties. I’m more tender in my response to others, as I’ve known how hard and lonely life can get sometimes. All the events of the past have turned for my good, although I still have many unresolved remnants of that painful experience.

God is good—all the time. He uses our hard times to make us more like His Son, Jesus Christ. We are strengthened by this hope and His promise to turn it for our good regardless of what the situation looks like.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I pray that You would increase my faith when times are tough. I want to press forward in faith rather than stumble in fear. Help me to trust You more. Amen.
