Fight the Flesh

Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

Galatians 5:16

Years ago I heard a TV preacher confess that other than sweet potato pie, he had overcome all the temptations of his flesh. I was astounded at that bold proclamation.

My confession: A few months ago I was in a tennis class, in which a couple kept playing out of turn in front of me. With my saved and sanctified self, I was holding back the temptation to bop both of them on the head with my tennis racket! Not my best spiritual moment, but I was immediately aware of how much my flesh was gaining ground. I recognized that I needed to step back in that situation and be more Christ-like in my attitude.

Everyone who is a believer will struggle with their flesh (sometimes referred to as our carnal or sinful nature). It’s the part of us that continues to drive us towards pleasing ourselves above all else. We know we are in the flesh when we desire to get revenge, whether physically or verbally; when we want our way above all else; or when we can’t control our appetite, whether for food, sex, money, or attention.

Our spiritual and fleshly sides are constantly at war with each other. Yet if we walk in the Spirit, we will overcome the flesh. Walking in the Spirit is about listening and following the Holy Spirit within you. He will give you direction and wisdom for your life as you pray and seek God in His word every day. You may never get totally rid of the flesh; however, you can overcome and make it powerless in your life if you are willing to live a spiritual life.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I recognize that I give too much opportunity to my sinful nature. Give me the strength to walk in the Spirit every day so that my life will give off the aroma of Christ. In Jesus’ name, amen.
