Did I Miss Something

Why did you ever send me?

Exodus 5:22

Moses was minding his own business when God showed up with a burning bush. When God began to share with Moses that He was sending him to set the Israelites free, Moses resisted for many reasons. However, God worked around Moses’ inhibitions by using his brother, Aaron, as a spokesperson. The brothers went to the Israelites first and then to Pharaoh seeking the release of God’s people.

The same day of the request, Pharaoh refused to let the people go and ruled that the Israelites were to be tasked more heavily than what they were before Moses showed up. As a result of their suffering, they refused to listen to Moses. So after all the hesitation Moses had before God, after he went to the Israelites, and after he went to Pharaoh, Moses found himself on the outs with the Egyptians and the Israelites. He was frustrated because God told him that he was to lead the people out of Egypt, but it didn’t seem to be going in that direction.

Have you ever been there? You follow everything you know that God wants you to do, and the result seems worse than if you had never begun the journey. However, what we call a delay God uses as a part of His plan to get us where we need to be. By being tasked more heavily, the people were more ready to leave Egypt, especially after 400 years of oppression. By digging his heels against God, Pharaoh’s stubbornness ushered in the great plagues that became a powerful expression of God’s power and glory. By being tested and doubted by the people, Moses was developing thick skin in preparation of leading a discontented and stubborn people to the Promised Land.

If we find our spiritual calling and journey becoming more difficult, it doesn’t necessarily mean that we missed something. It could mean that God has testing, endurance, perseverance, and long-suffering to get us where He wants us to be for His purpose and calling.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I need Your intervention to give me discernment so that I don’t miss it. Help me to persevere when my calling gets difficult and I don’t understand everything that is going on. In Jesus’ name, amen.
