Can’t Afford to be Picky

Many of us are picky about our churches. We come late to church to avoid participating in the worship music that we don’t prefer. Or perhaps we avoid the Sundays when our favorite pastor isn’t preaching. If it doesn’t impede our weekly schedule, we may participate in a small group (if we like the people). If our kid’s sports schedule allows, we may find something easy to serve in the church (less time consuming the better so we can watch the game).

When our lives are going well (bills getting paid, kids staying out of trouble, marriage is good, etc.), we feel like we can pick and choose the parts of church we want to do. It’s easier to be picky when things are going our way. However, when life gets hard—we can’t afford to be picky.

Being desperate for God makes us less picky. We will understand the psalmist in Psalms 73:25 “Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.” Do we have to hit the wall of desperation to overcome our pickiness about church? Absolutely not! In fact, we can develop a deeper hunger for God to ignite passion that supersedes worship music, preferred preachers, and other forms of pickiness.

This would involve a change of heart, perspective, and attitude about church. It’s not there for our entertainment—we aren’t the audience for a performance. Instead, we are united participants of worshipping God. When we see Him as the center of attention, it changes us. We become less picky about our preferences and more drawn into His presence.

Prayer

Dear Lord, forgive me for my pickiness about church. Help to worship and serve You in spirit and in truth. In Jesus’ name, amen.
