For the LORD has made the Jordan a boundary between us and you…so your children might make our children cease to worship the LORD.
As believers, we are called to love unconditionally and forgive freely, just as we have been loved and forgiven by God. As we should and yet even after doing so, there may be times when we must release a friendship, relationship, or acquaintance due to their unhealthy influence over our lives. This can be a difficult experience, as we often feel led to be reconciled at all costs.
However, when the reconciliation comes at a spiritual, emotional, or physical cost due to the other party’s resistance to repent or change, it may be time to let it go. In some cases, it may not be a complete disconnect, especially in the case of families. However, sometimes (and, unfortunately, for some family members) it’s better for us to part ways and continue to intercede for them in prayer.
We must first check our hearts to be sure that we aren’t being controlled by our carnal nature more than the Spirit of God. This may require fasting, prayer, focused Bible study, and hard discussions with trusted friends. If there is still the conviction to part ways after doing these things, we can trust in the Lord to give us peace about it.
When we allow the misbehavior of other people to cross the boundaries that God has placed around us, we put ourselves at risk of pleasing people more than God. He has a plan for each of our lives that may be hindered by those who fail to recognize their limitations in our lives. Jesus has called each of us to be free to do His will every day without restraints.
Dear Lord, help me recognize the ungodly influences in my life that keep me from being what You want me to be. I pray for the strength and courage to walk away from those unhealthy relationships that draw my heart away from You. Amen.
