The number one way that anyone can tell that we are Christians is because we are changed from the inside out. Perhaps we used to curse all the time and now our language is cleaned up. Maybe we used to be moody and angry, but now peace and contentment surround us. Some of us used to be engaged in sexual immorality and we’ve moved our lives towards purity and abstinence.
Whatever our change looks like—it is as the prodigal son’s father proclaimed, “For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.” (Luke 15:24) We were once wandering in darkness and now we walk in the light. We were once swayed to and fro by every wind of doctrine, and now we are standing on the assurance of our salvation and God’s word. We were once filled with great wickedness and damnation, and now we are full of the Spirit of God.
Our change is most evident to those who live or work with us every day. Many times we never have to say a word about our change and they will notice. The change from God is deeper than mind over matter—it’s a spiritual transformation that mere words can’t describe. Our focus and drive is completely different. We don’t want to impress people anymore—we want to impress God. Our goals change where we don’t pursue the love of money and worldly goods, instead we are pursuing our heavenly and eternal rewards more.
The change happened because God drew us to Himself and we responded with faith in Christ Jesus. Our transformation is the beginning of Christian journey where we continue to be stretched in our faith towards spiritual maturity. Because He lives, we are changed!
Dear Lord, I want to be changed from the inside out every single day. Help me to resist complacency in my spiritual growth. In Jesus’ name, amen.
