My reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High.
King Nebuchadnezzar experienced phenomenal success as a world leader especially in the abundance of his riches and glory. In the midst of his success, he began to give glory to himself. Nebuchadnezzar had a dream that troubled him and Daniel was called in to interpret it. Daniel recognized immediately that the king would be humbled for seven years due to his pride. He warned the king to stop sinning and show mercy.
A full year passed and as the king walked along his roof, he gave himself credit instead of God for everything he accomplished. Immediately a messenger from heaven pronounced his judgment: he would become like an animal for seven years. During this time, the king ate grass, slept outside, grew long nails like a bird and feathers like an eagle. He became a horrible sight to see especially considering the height of his majesty.
At the end of seven years, King Nebuchadnezzar came to his right mind and gave God all the glory, praise, and honor. His first message praised the greatness of God and how little man was in comparison. His transformation was complete–his mess of a life was turned into God’s message.
We may never experience the rise, fall, and restoration of Nebuchadnezzar; however, God can take the messes that we make of our lives and turn them into His message. As believers in Jesus, we have been plucked out of the darkness of our souls into the light of salvation. Not that we have been so good, smart, or productive but because of His grace and mercy for all of our works of righteousness are as filthy rags.
We are made new in Christ to experience love, joy, and peace. Our mess can become God’s message of hope to those who are still lost and wandering through this life without Jesus. While we don’t flaunt our past, we should be mindful of sharing what we once were and who we are now in Jesus so that others can be set free. Our past mess can become God’s message.
Dear Lord, I’ve made a mess of my life like Nebuchadnezzar. But You are a God of mercy, and I call on You to change my heart so that my mess can become Your message. Amen.
