My fourth child was inadvertently marked absent for one of her classes. As a result, she was called down to the school office. As she was explaining her situation to the secretary, the assistant principal overheard and said, “She’s a McDowell, she’s not lying.” The reputation of the McDowell children was solid because they’ve learned to do the right thing and work hard in school. A good name matters regardless of who you are or where you live.
As believers–our reputation speaks volumes about our lives and how we live. Obviously, not everyone is going to like nor appreciate us. That’s a given. However, we must focus on the fact that we are Christ’s ambassadors on this earth. What we say or do reflects the kingdom of God. Our words and actions are either drawing people to want to know God or keeping them away from Him.
We aren’t going to be perfect people. Our goal is to mature in our faith every single day. We shouldn’t be exactly in the same place that we were last year about this time. We learn in 2 Corinthians 3:18 that we are being transformed “from one degree of glory to another”. We reflect this glory from God to our families, co-workers, neighbors, and anywhere we find ourselves.
This why we don’t respond the same as those in the world when we are dealing with difficult people or circumstances. Our responses when provoked by evil is to remain focused on Who we represent—the Lord Jesus. As ambassadors, we do our best to reflect His glory with our attitudes and tempers intact. This doesn’t mean that there aren’t times when we must be firm and direct when dealing with injustice or evil. We simply keep in mind that our reputations is more than just about us.
When we live as ambassadors of Jesus Christ, we don’t have to worry about our reputations because we live, move, and have our being in Him. Our name will reflect His name wherever we go.
Dear Lord, help me to always keep in mind Who I represent every day. Give me to live a righteous life that brings the aroma of peace in Christ Jesus. Amen.
