Stress L.E.S.S.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:28

Because our society continues to slide further away from God and His ways, people seem more stressed than ever before. When I was a child, I felt stress if I didn’t get a good grade or perhaps because I didn’t get my chores done—that stress was my own fault. However, children and teens today are stressed with worrying about school shootings or the infiltration of social media in their personal lives. In the same way, adults are stressed with changes in the culture, workforce, and in communities. As we deal with these stressors, marriages are under fire and the family structure is constantly changing.

As believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, we are living under the same pressure as everyone else. Yet, we are commanded by God in Philippians 4:6 “do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Even in the midst of turmoil, God gives us peace that we can’t even comprehend. How can we stress L.E.S.S.?

L – Let go of what you think you control and let God handle it.

“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. (Job 32:4)

E – Expect that there will be trials in this lifetime.

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

S – Stir up your faith in God with prayer and reading the Bible.

“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17)

S – Seek out wisdom to achieve spiritual, emotional, and physical balance.

“The wisdom of the prudent is to discern his way, but the folly of fools is deceiving.” (Proverbs 14:8)

Prayer

Dear Lord, I want to live a life with less stress. I pray for the wisdom in my choices that will give me the peace and rest that You offer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
