I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come?
Have you ever been in a place where you really needed someone to help? It could’ve been a major need like your car breaking down in traffic and someone pulled over to help. Or perhaps a minor need like being short in cash at the cash register and someone hands over just what you needed for groceries. Some of us have needed spiritual or emotional help from others with prayer and/or a hug.
And yet…haven’t we all at some point in time asked the question “Where is God when I needed Him most?” Sometimes we look to the hills for our help and we see nothing. This can be a test of our faith in God.
When Elisha’s servant looked up and saw the Syrian’s king’s army had surrounded their city—he lost hope. But Elisha prayed “‘O LORD, please open his eyes that he may see.’ So the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” (2 Kings 6:17)
We don’t have to literally see our help from the Lord. Instead, we can in faith, trust that God will answer our calls for help. He can open our spiritual eyes to see His help when we need it. As a result, we can experience the joy and awe of God helping us in our most dire times of need. Our Lord promises to never leave nor forsake us. As a result, we know that He’s aware of our needs all the time. Our help in everything comes from God when we seek Him first.
Dear Lord, I know that You are all-powerful and all-knowing God. I look to You for my help. In Jesus’ name, amen.
