Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.

Colossians 3:23

There are days when our work in the community feels like an adventure; yet, there are also times when work feels like a drag. We get tired of doing the same things with the same people for the same number of hours in the same week. Sometimes, this drudgery begins to take hold of our hearts and we find ourselves in a funk of discontentment. If we allow this root to grow in our minds and hearts, we will find ourselves becoming more bitter at people in our workplaces. Yet, if we pause in that moment to reflect on these 7 steps of truths, we will find our joy and strength reinvigorated to work more purposely:

Step #1) Remember Who we are working for..
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” (Colossians 3:23)

Step #2) Recognize our season at any job could change in a moment…
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1)

Step #3) Renew our minds every day in prayer and the Word of God (Bible)…
“So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.” (2 Corinthians 4:16)

Step #4) Rejoice at the opportunity to shine the light of Christ…
“You are the light of the world…let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14, 16)

Step #5) Reject negativity, bitterness, and an unforgiving attitude…
“Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” (Colossians 4:31-32)

Step #6) Restart our thought processes to the original calling and purpose of God…
“Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall.” (2 Peter 1:10)

Step #7) Reinvigorate our relationship with God to usher in His presence every day…
“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” (James 4:8)

Prayer

Dear Lord, help me to shine Your light in the workplace with my words, actions, and attitude every day. In Jesus’ name, amen.
