How to Deal With Stress

You will find rest for your souls.

Matthew 11:29

As much as we try to not have stress, it always seems to catch up with us when we least expect it. Stress is a normal part of the human journey. Sometimes we need a little stress to get us back on track so that we aren’t undisciplined and lazy with our life choices. However, if we aren’t careful, our unchecked stress can negatively impact our spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical well-being.

Sometimes we think we’re trusting in God; and when things start to fall apart, we suffer from insomnia and lose the ability to focus. As believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, we aren’t immune from stress; but we are equipped by the power of God to deal with it. When we feel the pressure, we need to remember how to D-E-S-T-R-E-S-S:

D – Determine the source of our stress (Proverbs 20:5).

E – Engage in prayer with God about our stress (1 Peter 5:7).

S – See our stressful situation the way God sees it (Isaiah 55:9).

T – Take a break from our stressful situation (Matthew 14:13).

R – Remember to do the activities that reduce our stress (Ecclesiastes 5:18).

E – Energize our thoughts to counter stress with God’s word (2 Corinthians 10:4).

S – Seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance while going through stressful situations (John 16:13).

S – Share with godly friends your concerns about being stressed (James 5:16).

Stress will happen in our lives because we are constantly battling against Satan, the world, and our flesh. It’s not a sin to be stressed at times; rather, it’s an opportunity for us to return to our Savior for spiritual refreshment. The living water that comes from God will replenish our spirits, minds, and bodies as we come to Him.

Prayer

Dear Lord, my stress is unbearable at times. Plunge me beneath the living waters for refreshment, and replenish my strength in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
