A Spiritual Sabbatical

So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.

Hebrews 4:9

Busyness has always been a part of my adult life. I was a busy stay-at-home mom with five children for over 20 years, and I’m now a busy single, working mom. Recently, I found myself hitting a place of emptiness where I have felt spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically drained. This isn’t where I believe God wants me to continue living. In fact, I’ve felt led to do a spiritual sabbatical for a period of time.

A spiritual sabbatical is about removing the busyness of life and standing still in the Lord. It means taking activities out of our lives that have us running in and out of our homes. It’s about spending more time with our families by coming home after work and remaining in the house. Instead of wasting hours upon hours watching TV or surfing the Internet, a spiritual sabbatical means more time reading books to deepen and broaden our knowledge. A spiritual sabbatical also involves making healthy choices in eating habits and maintaining regular physical exercise.

A spiritual sabbatical will help us grow closer to the Lord so that we can better hear His voice and follow the right paths He has for us. When we are on this sabbatical, we are journaling our experience and expectations for growth. We don’t intend to remain the same as we were before the spiritual sabbatical. This time will bring balance back to our lives so that we can be ready for the next season of God’s grace.

If we intend to do great adventures in the name of Christ, we must first slow down and regain our vision. Our steps are ordered by the Lord; and at some point in time, it will involve a spiritual pause from the busyness of life.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I’m tired of the busyness of life and I want to rest more in Your ways. Help me to take this spiritual sabbatical so that my life can bring glory to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
