It’s the Dog in Me Part 1

Divider

For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.

Romans 7:18

It’s in you. It’s in me. It’s in everyone. It’s the dog in us. The dog answers by the names called the flesh or sinful nature. Before your flesh starts barking that I’m wrong, just know that it waits for your moment of weakness to seize an opportunity for temptation.

Every time we lose our temper, gossip about someone, watch a TV show or movie that we shouldn’t, eat or drink to excess, speak or act disrespectfully to those in authority, entertain impure thoughts, love the things in the world more than we love God, become jealous or envious of others, start fights or arguments, it’s the dog in us.

The flesh is about us getting what we want when we want it and how we want it, even if we know better! We may want to do right before God, but our sinful nature keeps luring us back to what is wrong.

The Apostle Paul struggled as well: “For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me” (Romans 7:19-20). This is the cry of every sincere believer who wants their life to shine God’s righteousness and holiness.

What are we to do about the dog within us? Our first step is to recognize that we need to walk every day in the Spirit so that we resist the temptations of our flesh. This is a one day at a time Christian journey where we overcome through the freedom we have in Christ.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I recognize that I’ve let my sinful nature have too much influence over my life. Guide me on how to walk intently and purposely every day in the Spirit. Amen.
