When God’s People Give

Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that increases to your credit.

Philippians 4:17

Many of us give monetary gifts to the church even though we don’t have an abundance of wealth. Most ministries are blessed, not by large offerings from one or two families but rather from a diverse number of members giving out of their need. Many times the Apostle Paul sought freewill offerings from churches to support each other, especially in times of famine and persecution. As a result, many needs were met and the church could continue to do ministry in those areas. What drives God’s people to give?

Our gratefulness for the things He has done in our lives (Ephesians 5:20).
We give because we are grateful not just for the material things but more so for the gifts that God gives us. We can never out-give God because He blesses us in abundance.

Our expectation that God will provide everything we need (Philippians 4:19).
We give because we know that God will take care of us. God promises to give to us as we give to others (Luke 6:38).

Our desire to share with those who are in need (1 John 3:17).
We give because we are blessed in order to be a blessing to those who are suffering. Giving to our communities in the name of Christ speaks volumes of our trust and faith in God.

Our love for God’s people in equipping them to build Christ’s kingdom (Philippians 4:14-20).
We give in order that God’s kingdom will continue to thrive on the earth. Our giving to churches throughout the world helps them to spread the Gospel, especially in times of persecution.

Our knowledge that worldly goods will pass, but what we do for Christ will last (1 John 2:17).
We give because we know that our material possessions eventually will come to an end. However, when we give our wealth to God’s purpose and plans, we will see the fruits of it throughout eternity.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I want to keep a giving heart for Your people. Protect me from the temptations to be miserly and selfish with my worldly goods. Amen.
