God’s Gracious Hand

For the good hand of my God was upon me.

Nehemiah 2:8

As small children, many of us remember the hands of our parents guiding us along the way. If we tried to get off the right path, they would lead us another way. They did this because they wanted to protect us from getting hurt. As we grew older, their hands were directing us in a different way. Instead of a physical touch, their advice and wisdom helped us navigate through the tempting and perilous days of our teenage and young adult years. In this way, our parents were helping us to get off to the right start of becoming independent and responsible adults.

As children of God, what does it mean to have His hand upon our lives? Our heavenly Father guides us along the right paths as we submit to His leading. Sometimes He gently corrects us with the still small whisper of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes He uses the rod of discipline to pull us away from harmful decisions that can leave a long tail of consequences. Whatever the method, God’s gracious hand gives us life and favor.

To have God’s hand over our lives means that we aren’t abandoned by our Father. It means that every step we make is watched over by Him as He protects us from unseen dangers. If we should choose to resist doing the right things, His hand will guide us towards repentance. His hand of love can be trusted even when we feel our lives are out of control.

The hand of God over believers is evident everywhere we go. Even those who don’t know God will recognize His hand over us in our homes, work, school, and community. Our lives are a testimony of the hand of God keeps us along the way.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I sense Your loving hand over my life even when things aren’t going well. Increase my trust in Your hand to gently lead me to the right paths. In Jesus’ name, amen.
