Don’t Throw in the Towel

Divider

For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O LORD, from my youth.

Psalm 71:5

In the sport of boxing, a manager can throw in the towel when he or she feels their boxer is in serious trouble. When they do this, the match is automatically given to their opponent. In the boxing match of intercessory prayer, we may also be tempted to throw in the towel when interceding for other people.

When we are watching from the outside, it may appear that our prayers aren’t making a difference at all. In fact, those we pray for may even get worse at times. Yet as long as there is breath in their bodies, there is hope in God to do His good work in their lives.

Praying people are always tempted to give up; but because of the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, we keep praying. We are encouraged to keep on praying even if it feels like it’s in vain. There is spiritual activity that our human eyes and minds can’t comprehend. This is why Satan does everything he can to dissuade us from intercessory prayers.

Prayer warriors fight on their knees and refuse to give up even in the midst of great testing. While we may not always see the results when we desire, we are confident that God always answers in His best timing and will. The key to not dropping the towel is to keep praying regardless of the circumstances as we trust in God’s word.

Our prayers are based on God keeping His promises throughout eternity. We may be persistent, but our strength is focused on His faithfulness. As much as we love those we intercede for, God loves them more. Knowing this keeps us from throwing in the towel when praying for others.

Prayer

Dear Lord, sometimes I want to give up praying, but I know that You have a greater work in mind. Strengthen me according to Your word and in Your Spirit. In Jesus’ name, amen.
